The 3 EU AI Act Dates Confusing Every Business, And Why “Extension” Doesn’t Mean What You Think

Three EU AI Act dates are confusing businesses right now, and the confusion is producing exactly the wrong reaction. People catch one word, “extension”, decide the whole thing has slipped, and relax. For anyone running a chatbot, that’s an expensive misreading. So let me pull the three dates apart.
2 August 2026, chatbot transparency
This is the one that touches the most businesses, and the one people wrongly think has moved. It hasn’t. From 2 August 2026, Article 50’s transparency obligations apply, and your chatbot has to declare that it’s an AI. If a customer can talk to a bot on your site, that’s your deadline, and it has not been extended by anything.
2 December 2026, marking AI-generated content
The second date covers marking AI-generated content in a machine-readable way, watermarking, in plain terms, so synthetic images, video, audio, and text are detectable as AI-made. Through a transitional arrangement, systems already on the market before the August deadline were given until 2 December 2026 to bring that marking into conformity. It’s genuine breathing room, but narrow: only this specific marking duty, and only for systems that already existed.
Later, the high-risk systems
The third date is where the confusion is actually coming from. The obligations for high-risk systems, the Annex III category, were first lined up alongside August 2026, then handed a longer runway. That’s the “extension” everyone half-heard about.
And here’s the trap. People hear “extension,” picture the whole Act sliding backwards, and stand down. What actually moved was the high-risk timeline. The chatbot transparency duty under Article 50 did not move, it still starts in August 2026. Blurring those two together is the single most common mistake I’m seeing at the moment: businesses going easy on a chatbot deadline that’s very much still live, because they heard a different, unrelated part of the Act got more time.
The takeaway
Don’t let a headline about a high-risk extension talk you out of a chatbot deadline that’s almost here. The Annex III timeline shifting does precisely nothing for your chatbot, Article 50 transparency applies from 2 August 2026, and that’s the end of it. The good news is that the chatbot piece is quick to fix once you know what to look for.
